Something that we lack far too often in life is fun. And I don’t mean going out of our way to do typically considered ‘fun things’ like going to the movies or out for drinks (though I do think many Americans need more social fun). Fun can begin at home in the atmosphere you create. Why not live among a fun atmosphere? Why stick to the mainstream rules of what home decor usually constitutes? If you have a love of, say, carnivals, why not dress your windows and doorways with a circus tent valance? Your home is your palate. Quirky home decor is fun, interesting and a fresh alternative to cookie cutter styles. If you have eccentric taste, flaunt it and embrace eccentric decor.

Create Dimension and Colour Above

People use tissue paper fans and pompoms to decorate for parties, but why not…make ‘everyday a party’ and adorn your home with reusable party decorations like paper pompoms and garlands? Hang them from the ceiling for a fun and airy vibe. There usually isn’t much going on up there so adding colour and shape draws the eye to an inspiring view.

If you love the metallic shimmer of tinsel garlands, string those across a corner or above a doorway for an even snazzier touch.

So long as you put proper ceiling hooks in place, you can hang a beautiful 10’x10′ net of LED string lights from your ceiling to create a magical glow. The twinkling lights above are cosy and enchanting, casting a hygge feel.
Make an Eccentric Decor Statement with a Tapestry
Fun wall tapestries are an easy and affordable way to cover a huge piece of space on your wall with a beautiful design. Their light fabric material makes them easy to switch out, too.
1.
This geometric patterned pink, black, and gray triangular tapestry is an attractive backdrop. Bold and abstract, it could either be a focal point itself or it could easily complement a space showcasing other materials in similar colours. It’s perfect if you like a modern look and gravitate toward stone materials like cut gems or marble.
2.
For a more unique piece of art, this beautifully minimalist abstract black line drawing of a woman’s portrait meshed with flowers on white tapestry is an elegant and delightfully simple choice. And being black and white, it will match any decor theme.
Probably the least eccentric (but no less captivating!) are the following floral and mandala tapestries.
3.
This lovely light pink and peach floral mandala tapestry is classically feminine and soothing. Its symmetrical design is full of intricate detail without being visually overwhelming due to its light, muted colours and plenty of white space. It would make a gorgeous addition to any theme involving pink or florals.
4.

Another mandala but in a different style, this rose pink mandala tapestry also comes in many other beautiful colours. Its design is a more traditional mandala with a very busy and intricate design. All colour options are attractive but rose pink is among one of the lighter ones.
5.

This tapestry with pink flowers and green leaves on a white background is an easy-going floral piece that could adapt to any modest design theme. Its traditional design is contrasted with its bold pink colour. If you are looking for something more subdued but with a pleasing pop of colour, this is a great tapestry to display.
Eccentric Decor Themes
Some of the most fun decorating ideas revolve around an interesting theme. While not all of these ideas may suit your design palate, they may at least give you some ideas for how to fill your space with the things you love. Find the things that make you happy, and make it work in your home. One of the most exciting things about themed decor is that it can transport you to another world. And you don’t have to theme your whole house – you can of course create a themed room. In fact, I would definitely start that way and see how you like it. You never know where you’ll end up when you start letting yourself play with things you find fun and beautiful!
Collect Venetian Masks for a Festive Flair
Venetian masks are a classically festive and artsy look. They represent celebration, mystery, and fun. Of course masks are for wearing – whether to a masquerade or costume party – but some of them are created solely for decoration. Whether your mask is an actual mask or solely eccentric decor, you can display it on a wall or on a stand. Cluster them in groups or space them apart in different places. The fun thing about Venetian masks is that you will find a delightfully diverse array of styles!
1.
These Venetian masks come in various colours and fun styles from Harlequin to feathered.
2.
This white masquerade mask is beautifully simple and subtle piece with curved white detailing. It can also come in other colours.
3.
Complement the white mask with a black masquerade mask in similar style.
4.
This black masquerade mask trimmed with gold is similar to the plain black one but adds a little more dramatic decadence.
Live Among the Clouds with Floating Hot Air Balloons
Hot air balloons have become popular nursery decor. I’m guessing that’s because anything that you would naturally suspend (as on a mobile) is appealing to babies and so becomes associated with nurseries. But hanging hot air balloons from the ceiling anywhere in your house is a fun and whimsical way to decorate. Anything that is naturally light, free and airy lends a sort of dreamy, light-hearted feel to your space. Hot air balloons are traditionally very colourful and are associated with fun (as opposed to airplanes which are primarily used for transportation and also for warfare). A hot air balloon theme is the perfect eccentric decor to create a playful and optimistic spirit in your home.
1.

These colourful 3D-printed hot air balloons are about 4.5″/12 cm tall. There are also 9″ ones available with a bulb inside to plug in and light up for a vibrant glow.
2.

These paper hot air balloons are adorable and delightfully easy to hang. Because they are so light (being paper), they can be pinned anywhere on the ceiling with a thumbtack. It’s relaxing to watch them continuously move, even without a real draft, creating a lifelike breeze effect. The purple/blue colour combo is calm and pleasing, but there are so many other fun colours available including rainbow/assorted, ‘flamingo’ tones, orange, pink, yellow, and more combos.
3.

These handcrafted hot air balloons come in a variety of colours and sizes and can be personalized with letters of your choice. The yellow and white-striped balloons are especially striking and cheerful!
4.
If you favor nautical colours, this handsome navy and white striped fabric hot air balloon is also available in multiple sizes from a different seller. Its subtle details, such as a strand of mini white pompoms circling the base of the balloon, add the perfect touch.
5.
These paper hot air balloons available in multiple sizes and pastel colours are delicate and adorably embellished with little bows and banners. I want one in every colour to match my pastel walls.
6.

These handsome 16.5″ fabric hot air balloons handcrafted in Kyiv are available in various fun colour combos and include wooden baskets with miniature wooden rope ladders and anchors.
7.
Remember Chinese finger traps? That’s what these 4.5-inch chequered paper hot air balloons in personalised colour options remind me of – except in the shape of a balloon, of course! They’re light, colourful and festive.
8.

These tiny wooden laser-cut hot air balloons are super unique and really fun to look at. They fit in the palm of your hand and can be personalized to make a perfect holiday ornament or gift for any year-round occasion. Many of them hanging from the ceiling would create a beautiful replica of Cappadocia!
9.
In addition to hanging hot air balloons from the ceiling as a part of your eccentric decor theme, you can take it even further and hang a hot air balloon light fixture! This handsome neutral-coloured hanging hot air balloon lamp features an attractive rope design that embellishes the balloon body. You’ll also find a miniature ladder scaling the side of the basket. It requires a maximum 22-watt LED bulb to fit an E27 socket at the end of its 5.9-foot cord. Standard American light bulbs fit E26 sockets so if you live in the USA, be sure to purchase an LED light bulb that fits an E27 socket.
Embrace Whimsy and Fashion with Unlikely Props
Lingerie is a creative and beautiful way to decorate our bodies. However, with some party-themed exceptions, it isn’t something that gets seen very often. And what a shame, because it’s so attractive (and usually isn’t cheap)! What if we celebrated lovely lingerie by showcasing it as eccentric decor? Hang it on the walls as you would display any other piece of art. Fashion is, after all, art. We wear our fashionable clothes all the time, but lingerie is usually relegated to our dresser drawers except for more intimate occasions. It shouldn’t be. If you own any beautiful lingerie, let it grace your home!
1.

WOW just wow. If you can’t find a special occasion to wear a futuristic metallic sculpted corset, then by all means show it off in your home as eccentric decor! These metallic sculpted corsets are one-of-a-kind wearable creations with nods to both Mirrormask and Schiaparelli (more on the latter below). The attractive cut and sensual sophistication would look stunning – whether on you or the wall! For unique lingerie and other showstopping pieces from a full-face metallic gold masquerade mask to long black gloves with metallic nails, you can’t go wrong here.
2.

For a completely different and equally lovely style, check out these beautiful feminine flowery corsets and other lingerie sets and pieces from the same designer. They’re a bit more everyday-wearable and are filled with intricate and creative designs.
3.

What about pillow lingerie like this delicate pink heart pillow with black lace? It’s a lovely alternative to displaying actual/wearable lingerie, and it’s just as sexy! There are a number of other delightful pillows in different playful designs from the same creator.
4.

Another non-wearable but lingerie-themed decoration, this tiny corset-shaped soy wax candle is an impeccably perfect addition to your lingerie vignette. You can find other fun-shaped candles from the same creator formed as hearts, pointed ballet toes, puckered lips, animals, and more.
And finally, while there is plenty of gorgeous lingerie you can both display and wear, don’t miss these exquisite lace corsets from France if you adore traditional adornments and charm.
If eccentric decor was something you wore, its designer in house would be Elsa Schiaparelli. The Schiaparelli label has become one of my favourites because its designs are incredibly bold, creative and (more recently) body-centric. Here we’ll peek at some original Schiaparelli hats as well as some Schiaparelli-inspired pieces.
5.

These 1970s vintage Elsa Schiaparelli couture felt wool hats are original designer pieces that would look terrific either on your head or on a hat stand as a pop of eccentric decor. They are fun, comfortably light, and perfectly stylish for both casual and formal occasions.
6.

This 1930s vintage Schiaparelli navy and white striped hat with a navy brim is not only a unique shape but a unique pattern that will stand out in a crowd despite its modest colours. It is truly a one-of-a-kind find that’s most worthy to be worn on your head but also to be displayed on your wall!
7.
On the more flowery side is this 1960’s vintage Schiaparelli floral pillbox hat. It’s a graceful piece of art with springtime floral appeal. It would look beautiful for church, a garden party, a wedding, or brunch with your posse.
8.

If you want a dash of Schiaparelli’s shocking pink, you simply need this Schiaparelli-like 1960s vintage floral tulle net-brimmed hat. It’s maximalist in the best of ways with a nod to vintage Barbie.
9.

Attention, lovers of old-fashioned gems: get your hands on a vintage Edwardian-style leather and metal clasped hands belt. These are super fun, yet they aren’t they aren’t that common. I can’t say I’ve ever seen anyone wear one in my lifetime. If you love it, make it your heirloom signature statement belt. And, of course, it would make the most unique eccentric decor. Affix it across the top of a doorway or on your wall, and drape an interesting scarf to hang down under the belt.
There is No One-Size-Fits-All for Eccentric Decor
Explore some of the fun finds above. If none of them suit your style, let this list at least get you curious about what you do embrace as your own style. Start from the inside out, not the outside in. Instead of looking around at what you see in stores, look directly at yourself. The category for this post is The Fun and the Sexy rather than Making the Home. It could easily fit into either category. But the reason it is categorized as The Fun and the Sexy is because eccentric decor is fun (and sometimes sexy, too). Eccentric decor is certainly making the home – making it more interesting, that is – but it is also identifying and celebrating you in your space. Let your creative side shine in your space and don’t be afraid to go bold. The world needs more of that!
